r2modman FAQ

The questions we hear most — safety, Linux, multiplayer, profiles, updates, and more.

Is r2modman safe to use?

Yes. r2modman is fully open-source (ebkr/r2modmanPlus on GitHub) and widely trusted by the Risk of Rain 2 and Thunderstore communities. It only installs mods from Thunderstore, a reputable curated mod repository. Always download r2modman itself from the official GitHub releases (or this page, which links straight to them).

Do I need to install BepInEx separately?

No. r2modman automatically installs BepInEx (or the appropriate loader — MelonLoader, Northstar, Shimloader, UE4SS, etc.) for whichever supported game you select. Manual setup is only needed in unusual cases.

Does r2modman work on Linux?

Yes. Native Linux builds are provided as AppImage, .deb, .rpm, .pacman, Flatpak, and tar.gz. Proton support for Windows-only games has also improved significantly — WINEDLLOVERRIDES automation was re-added in v3.2.13 and UMM issues on native Linux / Proton were fixed in v3.2.14.

Will r2modman affect online multiplayer?

Some mods may break or be disallowed in multiplayer. r2modman's profile system lets you keep a clean vanilla profile alongside your modded profile — so you can switch between them for online play. Always check each game's own rules before using mods online.

Can I have multiple mod setups?

Yes. The profile system lets you create any number of profiles per game with different mod sets. You can import/export profile codes to share configurations with friends or restore them on another machine.

Does r2modman work with non-Steam versions of games?

Yes, as long as the game is one of the supported titles and you can point r2modman at the correct install directory. This includes Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Game Pass (where modding isn't sandbox-blocked), and standalone copies.

How do I update r2modman itself?

r2modman checks for updates on startup and shows a banner when a new release is available. You can also check the Releases page here to see what's new in each version. Updating is a simple installer run — your profiles and local mod cache are preserved.

What is Thunderstore?

Thunderstore (thunderstore.io) is the curated mod repository that r2modman pulls from. It hosts tens of thousands of mods across the supported game list and handles versioning, dependencies, and community ratings.
